Physical Training: The “Do Something” Mentality

Don’t get bogged down by looking for the “absolute best” physical training program… Do Something.

With all the physical training programs out there all claiming to have the fitness solution… how do you pick just one.

Don’t!

The truth is, there is no absolute one best physical training program that can do everything for everyone… no matter what the hype.

Experiment with different physical training methods, stresses and intensities to find out which one is right for you at this particular moment in time.

Modify physical training programs to meet your own personal goals, needs, abilities and limitations.

But above all else… Do something!

In my experience I have noticed a couple of things when it comes to how people approach physical training…

First, people spend too much time looking… and not enough time doing.

This physical fitness program worked for so-and-so, but so-and-so said this one was best, but I read somewhere that this program worked, blah blah blah…

Quit looking for something to do… and do something.

Looking for a physical training program is doing absolutely nothing to improve your fitness level.

No physical training… no benefits.

The absolute best workout routine is a fable… So quit wasting your valuable training time on senseless analysis.

Second, people spend too much time analyzing their physical training.

I do not care who you are, how many probes you have stuck in unmentionable places, how many tests are performed or how many machines monitor your every move… You will never be able to determine how every molecule of your body reacts to physical training.

Now don’t get me wrong… scientific study is important and can point you in the right direction.

But once you are pointed in the right direction… go out and do something.

Don’t bother me with what happened to 100 lab rats in 1986… I’m busy training!

Furthermore, this analysis period seems to happen way too early in the physical training.

The effects of physical activity will be seen over time.

Just keep doing something to improve your fitness levels and you will see those positive benefits over time.

Third, people get sucked into “Quick Fix” physical training fitness solutions

How many times have I seen someone on the right track with their physical training… only to be side-tracked by some “Quick Fix” physical training fitness solution.

They fail to see miraculous results like the ones advertised in the pop fitness cultures marketing hype and decide that the physical training they are doing just isn’t worth their time.

But the truth is… physical training is a journey, not a destination.

You will never reach your perfect fitness level and then be able to stop.

And this journey is a personal journey… no two paths will or should be exactly alike.

You must find your own path towards physical fitness success.

You must do something… and keep on doing something!

I’m going to let you in on a little secret… You will never enjoy any long-term benefits from your physical training if it does not become a part of your lifestyle.

And no physical training will become part of your lifestyle if you don’t do something that makes sense to you.

Look past the hype and ask yourself, “Will this type of physical training bring about the results I seek, and will I continue to do it to enjoy long lasting physical benefits?”

If the answer to this is yes, don’t keep second guessing yourself… start immediately.

Wait a minute, what are you still doing reading this article… get out there and do something!

Super Fast Weight Loss

As a personal trainer, my main goal is to help clients succeed. I find that individuals drop out when they don’t see results, or if they have to work way too hard for perceptible change.

It is the quality of exercise, and not the quantity (duration) that brings results. Today, our lives are more hectic than ever. Making time for exercise can be difficult, if not impossible.

There is good news. A mere 15 to 20 minutes a day is enough for fitness gains, as long as you are regular. This means that you do not have to spend hours sweating for great results.

The following tips help you get the most value for your time and supercharge your weight loss efforts. These tips save time, but also require consistency. You will see results within a few weeks if you stick with these ideas.

1) Do exercises that use multiple muscles, called compound exercises. Consult your gym instructor/ look online for a suitable program. For example, a squat uses the front and back of your legs as well as your butt. After each squat, add an overhead shoulder press using a light dumbbell and you will hit even more muscles. ‘Isolated’ exercises such as biceps curls and triceps extensions are less effective.

2) Focus on large muscle groups. Working your biggest muscles burns tons of calories and will give your metabolism a good boost. These muscles are your butt, thighs, back and core that is, lower back, abdominal and oblique muscles.

3) Increase the intensity of the cardiovascular workout. This increases the calorie burning effect and cuts the time. If you walk, then jog. If you run, then try the occasional sprint. An incline on a treadmill works well too. Instead of doing forty minutes of walking, jogging or low impact aerobics go on a bike or treadmill at a high intensity for twenty minutes. If you have been working out regularly for at least a month, you could try doing intervals.

4) Try periodic boosts in intensity. Exercise at a level that to you is hard, or very hard for two minutes. Then, lower your effort – but keep moving! – For one minute. Repeat this cycle for twenty minutes.

5) Double up your exercises. Rather than resting between sets, use that time to work a different muscle group. For example, alternate one set of biceps curls with one set of triceps dips. Alternatively, do a set of seated leg extensions with a set of leg curls. These are super-sets and they nearly double the number of exercises you can do in a short time.

6) Combine strength and aerobic workouts – Circuit training. Doing this type of work out gives you calorie-burning benefits with strength gains. For example, do a strength exercise for one minute. Without taking any rest, move on to another. Every two or three exercises add one minute of jump roping or your aerobic activity of choice for one or two minutes.

7) Squeeze in short bursts of exercise during the day – Before your morning shower and breakfast, or during your lunch hour, squeeze in two sets of ten of the following bare-essential moves: crunches, pull-ups, push-ups, squats and lunges. These calisthenics target and tone most areas of the body but do not take more than a few minutes to do. Short bursts of exercise add up. If you can accumulate 30 minutes of physical activity in a day in short bursts, you will get the same benefits you would if you did it all in one session.

8) Mix it up! Variation is the key to long-term progress. Monotony in an exercise routine leads to boredom, which will eventually lead to no exercise. A change in the type of aerobics, or your specific weight training routine will avoid this problem and will give you greater fitness benefits. You will burn more calories and stimulate muscles in a new way, achieving more in less time.

Why did you decide to become a personal trainer? Was it your love of exercise? The rush you felt when you lifted a new max weight or beat your best time on the track? Maybe it was the thrill of being able to do what you love each day and help others to follow suite. Most likely it was your passion for fitness, and your passion for helping others, combined.

With clients who are dedicated and excited about their workouts, co-workers who share common interests and ideals, and constant access to exercise equipment and health food we have a wonderful and rewarding job.

Unfortunately, we usually end up with a few clients who make it difficult to stay passionate about our work. Some of our clients cancel at the last minute, or show up twenty minutes late. Some seem to expect us to lift the weight for them, on every rep of every set. And some simply want us to wave a magic wand and grant them new bodies on the spot.

While the former type of client fuels our fire, the latter snuff it out. So how do we keep our passion alive?

We take time to evaluate our situation, and make changes where necessary. There is no point in spending hours in the gym waiting for clients who do not show. Make a contract that states the amount of time you will wait before the session is canceled. Set up a prepay system; if the client has already paid for your service they are more likely to utilize it.

Get to know your clients on a non-exercise level. Find out their likes and dislikes, their hobbies and favorite types of music. This is done simply with a short questionnaire, in your introductory conversation, and over a period of time. Use this information to tailor their workouts. For example, if a client is a baseball fan incorporate some baseball drills into their warm up, or have them play catch or run bases as part of their cardio routine.

When your client has fun, you have fun.

Of course, sometimes it is more a matter over time that causes our passion to burn out. We tend to put so much effort into helping and pleasing our clients that we forget about ourselves.

Just as we plan our workouts and menus we need to plan time to relax. If you spend all day in the gym with clients, squeeze in a quick workout for yourself, and then rush home just to eat, sleep and wake up to start all over again, it’s no wonder you’re burnt out.

As fitness professionals we know that our muscles need adequate time to rest, refuel, and repair. The same goes for our mental and emotional health.

Perhaps this means taking a break from training clients on Saturday mornings, or making sure you are out of the gym by seven each evening. Maybe you need to schedule regular visits to a masseuse or buy tickets to your favorite sporting event or musician.
Even spending as little as ten minutes in the sauna or whirlpool after your workout to simply relax and regroup could help.

Passion was what drove us to become fitness professionals, but it is not in endless supply. Take a look at your schedule and habits and then make the necessary changes. The spark of passion is always there, and just a small change can be enough to refuel the fire.

5. Use the golf training aid consistently, every time you practice. You need to groove the stroke and you can’t do that unless you keep at it. Also, if possible, use the device at home or at the office when you have a spare minute. This extra practice time really helps.

Over the years we have had our share of both excellent and suspect Personal Trainers. From these experiences come the 7 things that they do to tick clients off.

1. Fail to keep appointments: perhaps this should be saved for number 7 as it is the most unbelievable; you know save the best for last. This is the case of the trainer that calls on the day of the appointment, sometimes within hours, and wants to let you know they will be unable to train because they got tied up. Still worse is the trainer that runs perpetually late. Picture yourself at the gym, warming up, and looking out for your trainer. At the appointed hour they are no where in sight so you begin to lightly workout. 10 minutes into the scheduled hour they come strolling in asking to be forgiven for running late. O.k., things happen. The question is do things happen 2 weeks out of 4. My advice? Get a new trainer.

2. Neglect to keep charts on their clients. How in the world is a trainer supposed to keep a mental note of all the particulars surrounding a clients health, contact information, goals, workout weights, injury areas, to name a few. Boggles my mind how many trainers simply write nothing down. They truly must have amazing memories.

3. Eating while training a client. Hey, I get hungry too and I also work a long day. It would be unimaginable for me to eat in front of a client unless we went out for a meal. Frankly it does not matter if it is a power bar, a peanut butter sandwich or a bag of trail mix. I pay you to work me out, eat on your own time.

4. Talking to other trainers, or familiar clients, while working me out. Here’s a novel thought: my health and safety for that one hour is in your hands, your complete attention is required. It does not matter to me if your best friend from grade school that you have not seen in 10 years just walked in. Your attention is on your client for one hour.

5. Children do not belong in the gym. Not the client’s kids or the trainer’s. Last thing I want is to hear or see is kids when I am trying to concentrate on touching a cone while balancing on half a foam roller with a 20 pound jacket on my body. Don’t get me wrong, I like children. I don’t like children at the gym.

6. Talking on cell phones, or texting, while working out a client. This one might have been a contender for the number one position. As if the invasion of cell phones in not pervasive enough it has now entered the gym. Picture this: client is doing a deep lunge exercise down a lane at the gym. Following behind offering no words of encouragement, but “spotting” her is trainer on cell phone. Unbelievable. Unbelievable that the trainer is on the phone and equally nuts that the client does not care. Important caveat: clients are guilty too. Recently I witnessed a client doing step ups on to a platform while speaking on the phone. It was her husband who “always calls me when we hear this song”. Could you just wretch?

7. Lack of creativity in workouts. Worse is the trainer who you know is making up the routine as we go along. Getting to the gym takes a certain amount of motivation for most clients. Help us out and add some variety to the exercise routine.

The last item is for the gym owners in the reading audience: stop being cheap and make sure the carpets are cleaned, the equipment is updated and in good working condition, the amenities in the locker room are clean and control your employees or contractors. At $50 to $75 per hourly session these are reasonable requests.

If you are shopping for a personal trainer, use this list to size up the trainer and the facility you are contemplating using. Know too that there a many, many simply excellent, diligent, qualified trainers that fit none of the faults mentioned above. In fact this article is a result of observations made while either warming up for, or working out with, my trainer who cannot be faulted for any of the issues sited.

What is it they say, oh yeah, no pain no gain! What the heck’s that all about. I mean, why should we have to endure regular pain and discomfort just to look physically normal. Whether you’re clinically obese, or just need to shed a few pounds, I can guarantee you one thing; put more of the right kinds of grub down your gullet and take the dog for a good walk every evening and you will notice a difference. You’ll not only start to look better you’ll begin to feel great too, and that’s a promise! What! Don’t have a dog? Well walk somebody else’s pooch then. Honestly, these are typical comments from idle folks, always looking for a get-out clause.

Depending on who you are, how out of shape you are, and your personal circumstances, are all factors which will determine what kind of exercise training program you set yourself.
